I grew up in Baltimore, MD where I obtained my B.S. in biology from Towson University. While attending Towson University I participated in undergraduate research characterizing and classifying Spiroplasma bacteria, and spent some time working as a lab assistant in the virology department at Quest Diagnostics. Before attending graduate school at the University of Georgia (Go Bulldogs!), I worked as a microbiologist at Alpharma Inc., a generic pharmaceutical company located in Baltimore.
I obtained my Ph.D. in microbiology in 2008, and at that time moved to Port St. Lucie, FL with my husband. Before Joining IRSC in the Fall of 2012, I taught high school science and math at Morningside Academy for four years. It was at Morningside Academy where I received my alias "Dr. CY."
My passions are in science education and increasing minority participation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. I am currently an education major at the University of Central Florida, and I serve as a science instructor for the Upward Bound program at IRSC.
